Ballroom
Dances offers a wide variety of steps and
techniques. Traditional Ballroom Dance sweeps you around the entire dance
floor in unison with your partner. Always graceful and elegant, the steps
can be slow and romantic, or lively and fun. Ballroom Dance is suitable for
weddings and dinner dances. Foxtrot** is a simple basic step that is easy to learn. A slow-medium dance. This basic dance is a great place to learn how to be a good partner-how to lead and how to follow. Slow Waltz** is a graceful, slow and romantic dance. Frequently the spot light dance for the wedding couple. It is no doubt the most popular of the slow dances. Tango** is a challenging fiery dance full of drama and flashy steps for the partner. Quick-step is a faster, high-energy variation of the Foxtrot, often danced to Big Band Music. Viennese Waltz is a faster version of the Slow Waltz. Blues danced to slow blues and jazz, very simple steps, not a popular dance these days. Polka
This dance comes to us from Bohemia at about the same
time as the Viennese Waltz was made popular in Vienna. It is fast paced and
has been very popular in Europe and North America and is a dance our
grandparents were familiar with. Here in North America several styles have
emerged over the years. |

Swing
Dances are a truly American Dance style if there
is one. This dance became very popular during the Big Band Era and remains
popular today as we dance to the popular music of the day. The music can be
blues, jazz, ballad, or country and it is all danceable. The roots of this
dance come from the Balboa, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Black Bottom and
Jitterbug. Swing & Jive** are the terms Ballroom Dancers know this style of dance by. It has several step and timing patterns. single step, double step and triple step. In this area double step is the least popular of three styles. This is a spot dance where the lead dance showcases his partner while moving her around him in a variety of patterns. It is also know as East Coast Swing to the Swing Dancers. Jive is triple step and slow, while Swing is single step and faster. East Coast Swing** this is what the Swing Dancers call Ballroom Swing & Jive and while very similar, it has a style all its own. The commonality with Swing & Jive is the triple step pattern both groups use. They both feature the lady being shown off by the lead dancer who anchors the pair. West Coast Swing** originates in California where dance floors were crowded and the dancers were allotted a slot on the floor to dance in. It has a 6 and 8 count step patterns and is a slow to medium speed dance ideally suited to blues music. It showcases the Lady and advance dancers allow the lady to play with the music which adds more spice to this dance. Smooth, Sensual , and playful are good adjectives for this dance. Night Club 2** is a dance popular with Swing Dancers and is a combination of waltz, foxtrot and rumba. A slow and very romantic dance which again showcases the lady and frequently danced to ballad type music. Ideal for Weddings. Hustle** is a dance reminiscent of Swing but made popular in the Disco Clubs and is a medium or fast paced dance suited to dancing to the heavy beat of Disco Music. There are two timing variations 3 beat and 4 beat with the 3 beat timing being more common here. If you know swing this is an easy dance to learn. ** All Dances marked thus are dances taught in Beginner Basics Group Classes. |
